5/15/11: Planning and Scheming - Simplicity Trousers for Me

I don't know why it is, but it is. Pants, trousers, jeans, or whatever you want to call them, are one of the most scary things in the world of sewing--for me anyway. Every time the idea of sewing my own crosses my mind, visions of a temperamental fly zipper, a finicky waistband, and ill-fitting legs seem to form. It can literally scare the pants off you! :)

So why on earth did I do it? I am talking about buying the following:

Yep, you're eyes do not deceive you. I bought yards of black poplin from Fabric.com and Simplicity 2860.

The reason behind this absurdity is the lack of the much talked about garment. Because I am over 6 feet, finding a good pair of pants that have long enough legs is a true expedition. In fact, I have yet to find one that truly fits well. My frustration over this has led me to do something I never thought I would: sew my own.

I know, I know. I will most assuredly find my fill of troubles once I dive into this insane pants project of mine, but I am going to go through it with a relaxed and sit-back-have-a-good-time sort of mindset. In past experiences, I've lost the sense of enjoyment that can be reaped from working with my hands. I only thought of how long I was taking and sensed the project's poor construction, for I was working too fast and haphazardly. This time it shall be different. I am going to look at it as a laid-back sewing lesson for myself. I will learn a lot about fit and sewing when I start this project and my plan is to enjoy it every step of the way.

I will share future updates on my pants, which I will be calling "For the Fun of it Trousers." So stay tuned, there is more to come!
