2/15/11: My Spool of Thread and Sewing Frowns

photo taken from this site

I did something a little fun today, may even goofy to some people, but I went on a sewing field trip. I moved my sewing machine, serger, and pajama project all the way over to. . . A different room in my house. "For what ever for?" you ask? Well, I was reading on Tasia's blog about a sewing shop called Spool of Thread, where people take their sewing projects and work there amidst other sewers and tons of thread and fabric! Now, I don't have anything like that shop around here but I can't help but dream about it.

So that is why I packed everything up and moved to a bright and sunny room in my home. And I made sure that I had an easy lunch to prepare for my family as well as leaving my laptop far from me. I wanted to be completely alone with my sewing.

I am very blessed to have a special designated room in the house just for my crafting (it used to be a nursery). But I think every person needs a change of scenery, especially when they spend literally hours in one room every day. After I am done making these pajamas I will head back to our good ol' sewing room and maybe another sunny day will come along and I can make another stop at my Spool of Thread. :)

Now onto a different subject altogether. I want to be blunt here and say, "Why can't I sew?" Yeah, that question sure fits this whole blog, huh? Well, that is how I've been feeling today after my old friend, the sewing mishap, came along. I was sewing at a steady pace, keeping my seams straight, and my patch pocket curving beautifully, when it happened: I totally forgot to add my piping to the collar! I've been thinking about this piping addition since day one and for some reason my brain went dead and the piping was forgotten. And it was sitting right by my machine, too! Gosh!

I do this a lot. Forget things or just not notice the details when sewing. A lot of the time I don't put Right Sides Together (the cornerstone phrase of the pattern world), or I mix up the right and left fronts of a shirt when sewing the shoulder seams. And what really bothers me is when I'm sewing, I'm thinking, "Oh, I'm not going to make that shoulder mistake again..." and in a couple minutes I realize that I mixed them up.

What can I do about this seam ripper addiction of mine? My older sister said to me that a lot of other people probably do the same things. So here is my question for all of you: do similar problems happen to you often? What do you to help yourself remember the required steps? Tell me all about your sewing mishaps and remedies!
